Having discovered bioinformatics through open houses at the University of Montreal, Carl Munoz has since completed a bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics there. During this time, he has completed two internships under Dr. Franz Lang at the Robert Cedergren Centre, using covariance models to find and annotate mitochondrial rnpB in Basidiomycete fungi. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in bioinformatics directed by Sébastien Lemieux, where he is searching how to use reference-free low-coverage RNA-seq to identify cancer types and subtypes more efficiently than using gene expression.
